When to visit Argentina
A country 3,700 kilometres long has no single best season — what the weather does in each region, and how to pick a month that suits the trip you want.

Argentina reaches from the subtropics to the edge of Antarctica, so the question is never when is Argentina good but when is this part of Argentina good. Seasons are the southern hemisphere’s: summer runs December to February, winter June to August.
Patagonia: December to March
The far south has a short window. From December to March the days are long, the trails around El Chaltén and Torres del Paine are open and the Perito Moreno Glacier is easy to reach. It is also windy — relentlessly so in January — and the busiest and dearest time of year. November and April are the shoulder: fewer people, cooler weather, some services already closing. Winter shuts most of the region down outside the ski resorts around Bariloche.
The Northwest: April to November
The opposite rhythm. The dry season, roughly April to November, brings clear skies and reliable mountain roads across Salta and Jujuy, which is when the Quebrada de Humahuaca and the high Puna are at their best. Summer storms turn the valleys green but can close gravel routes for days.
The Litoral and Iguazú: April to September
The subtropical northeast is hot and humid most of the year. April to September is the most comfortable stretch for Iguazú Falls and the Esteros del Iberá — mild days, fewer mosquitoes, good wildlife viewing. The falls carry most water from November to March, which is spectacular but comes with heat above 35 °C.
Cuyo: March to April, and October to December
Mendoza’s harvest falls in March and April, the best time to be in wine country and the month of the Fiesta de la Vendimia. For the high Andes, including Aconcagua’s approaches, the climbing and trekking season runs November to March.
Buenos Aires and the Centre: spring and autumn
The capital is pleasant in spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May), when the jacarandas or the plane trees turn and the temperature sits in the low twenties. January empties the city of locals and fills it with heat.
Crossing regions in one trip
Most visitors combine two or three regions, and the seasons do not align. The practical compromises:
- October–November: Patagonia opening, the Northwest still dry, Buenos Aires in flower. The best all-round month if you want both ends of the country.
- March–April: Patagonia in autumn colour, harvest in Mendoza, the Northwest entering its dry season.
- January–February: Patagonia at its best and almost everywhere else at its hottest and most crowded.
Holidays to plan around
Argentine school holidays in January and mid-July, plus Easter week, fill flights, hotels and national parks. Book months ahead for Patagonia and Iguazú in those periods, or shift a week either side and travel more cheaply.
